Mother’s Day Weekend Events: Funk Parade and American Field

We know this weekend is dedicated to the mothers and those who serve as a mother figure. However we at Men’s Life DC wanted to make sure we gave you a couple of Mother’s Day weekend events to consider for the special women in your life. Whether it’s taking them to a festive musical outing or looking for that last minute special gift, here are two unique and fun ways to spend your Mother’s Day Weekend.

Funk Parade

Start Mother’s Day Weekend with music. Saturday, May 12 marks the 5th anniversary of the Funk Parade. The parade is a one-of-a-kind day fair, parade and music festival in Washington DC’s U Street neighborhood. Funk Parade celebrates DC’s vibrant music and arts, the history of Black Broadway, and the Spirit of Funk that brings people together.

This year’s festival will include the Funk Parade Showcase at the Lincoln Theatre featuring  artists Ari LennoxMannywellzAyes ColdUnderdogNative Sun and Dreamcast. In addition to the Showcase there will be other events before and after the Parade. These venues include U Street Music Hall, the Howard Theatre and Union Stage.

Tickets for the Showcase are $15 but will go up to $20 the day of the show and will include General Festival Wristbands. For those not attending the Showcase, General Festival tickets will run $10 and gives purchasers a #FunkPowered General Festival Wristband, which will provide priority entry into the festival’s key evening music venues: Tropicalia, DC9, Ben’s Next Door, Franklin Hall, Signature Cuts & Shaves, Sollys, Velvet Lounge, Archipelago, Flash, Local 16, Sotto, Duffy’s, Marvin, Shaw Tavern, Exiles Bar, Bin 1301, Busboys & Poets, Songbyrd Music House (Late Night) and U Street Music Hall (Late Night). American Field

The traveling pop-up market is set to hit DC, Brooklyn and Boston for spring and then return to each of these locations for a fall session. AF puts a spotlight on authentic, high quality products. American Field once again returns to Union Market on May 12 and 13. Participating brands include Ball and Buck, the Boston based brand for sporting gentlemen, Virginia Dare Winery, Fellow Barber, Abbott NYC as well as DC’s own Small Wooden Box and Ryhe, the Made in USA brand of bags, among others.
