Food & Friends’ annual community-based fundraiser, Slice of Life, is underway with the goal of selling 9,000 Thanksgiving pies to provide nearly 30,000 meals for neighbors in need.
Now in its 14th year, Slice of Life has become a tradition in the Washington region as a simple and delicious way for members of the public to support Food & Friends’ large-scale effort to deliver nutritious meals to those in the community living with serious illnesses. Each pie purchased through Slice of Life provides one full day of meals for a Food & Friends client—adults and children battling cancer, HIV/AIDS, or other critical illnesses.
“This has been a challenging year for all of us. COVID-19 has made living with a serious illness or health condition even more difficult. Simply by purchasing a Thanksgiving pie – something many of us already plan to do this season – you can make the days a little easier and the holidays a little warmer for our neighbors who need it the most,” said Carrie Stoltzfus, Executive Director of Food & Friends.
Whisked!, recently voted by the D.C. City Paper Reader’s Poll as the Best Baker and Best Pie, is partnering with Food & Friends for the first time this year to bake the pies. Pies are available in five delicious flavors: Apple Crumble, Classic Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Nutty Pecan, and a Sea Salt Chocolate Chess Pie. Pie prices range from $28-$45, and the Sea Salt Chocolate Chess Pie includes an entry to win $500 in gift cards to a selection of regional restaurants.
All pies are 9″ rounds and packaged in a sturdy, gift-quality box. Pre-purchased pies can be picked up on Tuesday, November 24th at convenient locations throughout the D.C. metro region, including &Pizza locations and Marriott International hotels. Purchasers also have the opportunity to buy a pie for a Food & Friends client, to be delivered by volunteers on Thanksgiving Day along with a full turkey dinner.
Pies may be purchased directly from Food & Friends or through corporate or individual pie sellers. Visit www.foodandfriends.org/pie to find a directory of pie sellers, to sign up as a seller or to purchase online. Pie sales close on Thursday, Nov. 19.
