The Washington Commanders have received SAFETY Act Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, one of the federal government’s highest recognitions for security and risk management, the team announced.
The designation covers the comprehensive security program at Northwest Stadium and applies year-round across the entire stadium footprint. It recognizes the venue’s physical and electronic security equipment, emergency planning procedures and trained personnel.
Congress established the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act in 2002 to encourage the use of vetted security practices and technologies. The designation acknowledges organizations that implement, test and maintain advanced measures to help prevent, deter and respond to potential threats.
The Commanders earned the recognition after an extensive review that included security audits, operational assessments and collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement partners.
“This designation underscores the strength of our security and emergency preparedness programs and reflects the dedication of countless individuals across our organization and partner agencies,” said Trista Langdon, chief venues officer for the Washington Commanders. “Providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who visits Northwest Stadium remains our top priority.”
Langdon said the achievement resulted from collaboration among the team’s security and operations staff, public safety partners and local officials. She also thanked Petrone Risk for its guidance and DHS for the recognition.
The designation follows a series of investments at the stadium. Since acquiring the team, Managing Partner Josh Harris and the ownership group have put more than $150 million into facilities, infrastructure, security and technology. Those upgrades include CCTV systems, drone detection, frictionless screening at entry gates, vehicle mitigation barriers and gunshot detection technology.
The organization also improved food and beverage offerings, game presentation and premium spaces as part of its broader effort to elevate the fan experience. The 2026 NFL season kicks off Sept. 13, with the Commanders opening at home against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 27 at Northwest Stadium. Single-game tickets are now available for purchase online.
