The DC-native and singer Kenny Iko, whose birth name is Michael Timmons, has made a remarkable return to the spotlight, captivating national audiences on Season 28 of NBC’s The Voice and dropping a soulful rendition of a holiday favorite just in time for the season.
The R&B artist recently released his smooth, modern take on the Christmas classic, “What Christmas Means to Me.” Iko’s version of the track, originally popularized by Stevie Wonder, offers a powerful showcase for the rich vocals that have been turning heads for more than a decade.
From Go-Go Stages to Team Snoop
Iko’s recent journey to national television is a story rooted deeply in the District’s music scene. Though bullying in his youth initially caused him to step away from singing, he found his voice again at McKinley Tech High School. He started his career performing in the quintessential DC tradition: the go-go band, specifically with the group N2L. This experience performing in various local venues, often described as “hole-in-the-wall” spots, gave him the grit and confidence to sing on any stage.
He later became a member of the acclaimed R&B and pop boy band 4EY The Future. The eventual breakup of the group left Iko at a low point, but he refocused on his solo artistry. That persistence paid off when a producer from The Voice reached out, encouraging him to audition.
Iko stepped onto The Voice stage with a performance of Bruno Mars’s “Versace on the Floor,” a song he felt symbolized his reintroduction as a solo artist. His powerful high notes and smooth delivery earned him a coveted two-chair turn from coaches Snoop Dogg and Niall Horan. Iko ultimately chose to join Team Snoop. He successfully advanced through the Blind Auditions to the challenging Battle rounds before his elimination.
As he embraces his reenergized singing career, Iko hopes his journey—from facing bullies to finding the courage to pursue his dream—will inspire others in the DC community and beyond to chase their goals relentlessly.
