Jay Pharoah, Sommore to Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival in DC

Comedians Jay Pharoah and Sommore will headline the third annual Because They’re Funny (BTF) DC Comedy Festival, returning to The Wharf from October 10–12, 2025. Presented by NICE CROWD in partnership with Events DC—the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia—the festival is recognized as a leading celebration of multicultural voices in comedy.

BTF was created by the producers of the American Black Film Festival with a mission to celebrate and elevate underrepresented comedic talent. Named one of USA Today’s “Ten Best Live Events” of 2024, the festival continues to focus on launching the next generation of stand-up stars, while also showcasing comedy-driven film and television content.

The three-day event, set against the vibrant backdrop of The Wharf, offers a comprehensive comedy experience, featuring stand-up showcases, industry panels, special events, and spotlights on emerging comics. Since its inception, BTF has evolved into a significant cultural event in Washington, D.C., attracting attendees with its blend of established stars, up-and-coming performers, and programming that showcases the craft from multiple perspectives. Organizers anticipate the festival will once again provide a notable economic and cultural boost to the city.

Headliners Jay Pharoah and Sommore bring significant credentials to the 2025 festival. Pharoah, best known for his six-season tenure on “Saturday Night Live,” is widely celebrated for his sharp celebrity impressions and dynamic performances. Sommore, often referred to as the “Queen of Comedy,” is a veteran stand-up comedian notable for her quick wit, and her role in “The Queens of Comedy” tour film.
