National Capital Cabaret Festival returns for fourth year

Live storytelling and intimate musical performances will take center stage at the Barrel House Café & Bar as the Fourth Annual National Capital Cabaret Festival returns to the District, March 27 and 28.

Organized by the local nonprofit Capital Cabaret, the two-night event highlights a growing resurgence of the art form in the nation’s capital. The festival blends jazz, the Great American Songbook, and original contemporary works through a carefully curated mix of seasoned professionals and emerging artists.

“Cabaret is where storytelling and music meet in their most personal form,” a Capital Cabaret spokesperson said. “This Festival is about creating moments that stay with you long after the final note.”

The weekend schedule features four distinct performances that showcase the emotional depth and variety of the genre.

On Friday, March 27, local jazz vocalist Dan Murray teams up with Alfred Yun at 6:30 p.m. to present “Reviving DC’s Jazz Gems.” Steve Washington follows at 8:30 p.m. with “Songsmiths & Troubadours,” bringing a rich vocal blend of jazz and blues to the stage.

The festival continues Saturday, March 28, opening with an Emerging Artist Showcase at 6:30 p.m. Curated by Kelly Smith Jones, the showcase turns the spotlight on young performers stepping out from regional educational programs. Award-winning performer Michael Shea closes the weekend at 8:30 p.m. with “Psyche Knows The Way,” a deeply personal exploration of resilience and self-discovery driven by music and narrative.

Beyond weekend entertainment, organizers hope the event cements Washington as a primary cultural hub for cabaret. Capital Cabaret uses the annual festival to support its broader mission of advancing the art form through education, workshops, and community engagement.

Tickets and full schedule details are available on the Capital Cabaret website.
