‘The Notebook’ Musical set to make DC debut at National Theatre

The Notebook

“The Notebook,” the stage musical adapted from Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel, will make its Washington, D.C., debut when it opens Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the National Theatre. The production runs through Aug. 30.

The production brings to the stage a story that has drawn interest for three decades. Sparks published the novel in 1996, and a film adaptation followed in 2004, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The musical marks the latest chapter in the story’s long life across print and screen.

Set in North Carolina, “The Notebook” follows Allie and Noah, two young people from different backgrounds who fall in love one summer. The narrative unfolds across decades, tracing their relationship through separation, reunion, and the challenges of aging. On stage, three sets of actors portray the couple at different points in their lives, a staging choice that has become a signature element of the production.

The musical features music and lyrics by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, marking her Broadway debut as a composer. The book was written by playwright Bekah Brunstetter. The show first premiered at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2022 before opening on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in March 2024. It earned three Tony Award nominations during its Broadway run.

Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune said the show is “absolutely gorgeous, not to be missed,” and The New York Daily News called it “a love story for the ages.”

The National Theatre, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, is among the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country and has hosted touring Broadway productions for generations of Washington audiences. Tickets and performance times for “The Notebook” at the National Theatre are available online now.
